East Lothian Sightings August 2020

Sunny day. Butterflies out in numbers.

First ever Humming Bird Hawkmoth visited lavender in garden today. Too quick to photograph.

Decided to do a Big Butterfly Count at the flower-rich meadow next to Saltcoats Castle. Excited to see Holly Blue (2) and Wall Brown (7!) there, among many others. Until I discovered that the Wall is not on the list for counting. What am I supposed to do? I can't see anywhere to add in extra species. The second time this has happened to me.

Fantastic, Holly Blues have had such a good year this year. Would you mind sending me more details so that I can add it to the East Lothian spreadsheet?
Your name really is all I need, but a more exact location would be helpful. My e-mail is nmorgan@eastlothian.gov.uk Thank you.
I am not sure what you should do about the Big Butterfly Count. I have noticed there are a few common Scottish species that are not listed. You would think they would be interested to know about Wall Browns as they are not doing well down south.

Details sent as requested. More Wall Browns moving eastwards today along field margins. Where are they all going?

Finally saw my first Painted Lady of 2020 - early this afternoon, between the showers, in Prestonpans. Wonder how many thousands of them I'd seen by this date last year...?
