Hi there I am just getting into moths and had a number of shots I had taken over the course of the year which I have been unable to ID from any of my reference books. Can anyone assist with these?

Hi

No 1 is an Antler Moth
No 2 is Udea Lutealis
No 3 I'm not sure but it maybe a caddis fly?

Do you send your records to your county moth recorder? I'm sure that they would appreciate any records you ahve.

Hi Mark Thank you for such a quick response. I think you are right the third shot is a caddis fly. I have not sent anything into the county recorder as I am only getting into moths and butterflies and did not know there was such a person. I would be happy to send in any sightings but may need help with identification from time to time. I am also trying to get a macro lens so I can get better quality pics to help with ID.

Hi

I'm very pleased top hear that you getting into these great creatures and hope that you enjoy doing so. There are different recorders for moths and for butterflies.

Getting help with identifications can be done here, but perhaps better is the ScottishMoths YahooGroup which has more members. Your own County Recorder will help too.

Moths are recorded by Vice County and depending on whether you are East or West of Perth you may be in Mid Perthshire or East Perthshire. To find out, put a grid reference into this web site http://herbariaunited.org/gridrefVC/. Your Vice County Recorder will be Julie Stoneman or John Thorpe. Details here http://www.mothscount.org/uploads/CMR_%20List_%20VC_%20Format_10_01_13.pdf. You can find recording forms here: http://eastscotland-butterflies.org.uk/mothrecords.html

Butterfly Records go to either the SW Scotland or East Scotland Recorder. Look here for details http://eastscotland-butterflies.org.uk/butterflyrecords.html
