What a difference a day makes..Arthurs seat lots of butterfly activity especially small coppers and small heaths and my first Northern Brown Argus of this year..what a joy they are..2.
1 Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary this afternoon by Red Moss, near Balerno. It was nectaring on Self-heal at the roadside just north of the entrance to the carpark. Approx NT166641.
A walk through Holyrood park today. Glorious sunshine did not spot any northern brown argus but at least a dozen small heaths and minimum 10 small coppers plus several stunning cinnabar moths and the odd beastie such as scorpion flies.
A good wander round Holyrood Park today. Butterflies few and far between despite nice weather. About 7 small copper, 3 small heath and a speckled wood. Where do the northern brown argus hang out?

In fact, I think you will find that your image is of a Snipe Fly. Scorpion flies have totally different mouthparts and different markings along the side of their abdomen.
Perfect conditions in Edinburgh today..summer is here! Did my usual rounds of Arthurs Seat. 3 male Common Blue my first for this year also a first were Ringlets and Meadow Browns hard to say how many 5 to 10 each. 2 small copper and 2 small heath...the orchids starting to mature nicely too. A good morning and more to come.
Arthurs seat the usual suspects except my first Painted Lady of the year also of note, a pair of speckled woods on woodland path running down from queens drive to meadowbank..first time iv ever seen speckled woods in Edinburgh central. No picture tho but they are there.
