East Lothian sightings - March 2017

Postby NickMorgan » Thu 02 Mar 2017 14:42

My first butterfly of the year, seen in Haddington, a Peacock enjoying the warmth of the sun on the wall of the Bank of Scotland. :D

At last - my first butterflies of 2017! I saw a Red Admiral in Douglas Road, Longniddry this morning, and then followed it up a couple of hours later with a Peacock in Kings Park. It's been a long 3 months without them...

Jim,
As far as I am aware that is East Lothian's first Red Admiral of the year. Evidence of them overwintering, too!

I received a report from Abbie yesterday that she had seen a Comma on the 12th March near Longniddry. :)

Finally my first butterfly for 2017, a Peacock in our Macmerry garden this afternoon.
No surprise given the gorgeous weather and the now regular queen bumblebees

Yesterday I saw a Peacock while in the car near Whittinghame.

Such a nice day today but nothing doing along the Tyne between Abbey Mill and Sandy's Mill this morning.

This afternoon though at Saltoun Wood I spotted a Peacock and a Comma fighting for the same spot to bask in the sun.

The butterfly season seemed to really kick off in earnest yesterday (Sat 25th) as I quadrupled the number I'd seen this year in the space of a few hours. I got my first 2 Small Tortoiseshells of the year (both in Longniddry) as well as 7 Peacocks (5 in Longniddry, 1 Prestonpans and 1 in our garden in Gullane).

Great that the season proper seems to have arrived at last!
I have only seen a couple of Peacocks and a Small Tortoiseshell over the last couple of days, but I was painting the outside of my house, so there could have been hundreds behind me!!
Abbie sent me an e-mail telling me of 8 Peacocks, 7 Small Tortoiseshells and a Comma in Aberlady yesterday.
It won't be long until our first white of the year!
