Can anyone explain why. Caught last night on a MV

Hi Mark

It looks like a Rosy Rustic.

Butterbur have broader, more grey-brown wings with less distinct markings, indeed this late in the flight period the markings can be difficult to discern.

Thank you for your reply and advice. I can see what you mean. I have looked a comparison photos and see the differences.
Also Butterbur appears to be much less common according to Moths by months.

Indeed, Butterbur is rarely found far from its namesake food plant and even then not at all sites where it is present.
