Common Wainscot

Common Wainscot

I thought that I'd be a little more focussed in identifying Common from Smoky Wainscot this year after seeing very few of the latter in 2008. This one looked like a good candidate in the trap

But on lifting the forewing had a dusky rear wing!

The underside looks good for common though.

Just how dark can the upperside of the rear wing be on a Common?

The moth was retained and determined indeed to be a female common wainscot by Mike Bailey.
