We found a beautiful Herald moth under the roof of an outbuilding near Haddington - never seen one before! Lovely bronze patches and ragged edges to the forewings. Hadn't thought of this as a time of year to be spotting moths!

They are great moths aren't they. They overwinter as adults in just the kind of situation you mention or in tree cavities or even caves. They often overwinter in groups, so it may be worth looking around the building for some more.
