ID help please/hawkmoth

Postby MalcQ » Sun 03 Jul 2011 12:13

Hi folks,

Can anyone tell me what this moth is, seen by the saltmarsh at John Muir Country Park two weeks ago?

We also saw a speckled wood in the woods at JMCP on the same day - is this species spreading in Lothian?

We were lucky enough to have a hummingbird hawkmoth in our garden (in West Barns) yesterday, the second record for our garden :D

cheers,

Hi

Yes, the moth is a Yellow Shell; a day-time species.

I've still not seen a Hummingbird HM in Scotland - still looking out!

Thanks Mark,

I thought it might have been that species, but browsing the moth guide revealed a few confusingly similar species.

I have a few more photos on my PC labelled 'mystery moth [insert positive integer here]', so I'll be back (but next time I'll post my ID query on the correct part of the forum  )

cheers,
