Help with ID of Moth

Hi hello all
could you tell me what this moth is called it was a huge great big thing flew in at work, so I took some photos of it and I am curious, and is it male/female?
if anyone could help would be awesome I can supply more pictures if needed

Hi Mat

Your moth is a Poplar Hawk-moth. They are indeed one of the largest moths we get in the area. The males and females have the same colouration. They don't normally fly after the end of July, so was the photo taken a while ago?

Thank you for your reply and info it’s so interesting, to be honest with you my photos are a few years old and were taken when I lived in the north-east, are they still around as a species then? Do you know where they originate from when it flew in I thought it was a bird because it was that big a beauty in fact!
