Fantastic! I know what it feels like, finding that tiny object after searching for ages wondering if you are slightly mad :) There may be other people in Scotland who have found them, but if so I have not heard of it.

What is it on? It doesn’t look like a leaf bud?

It was on a leaf bud; here is more of the original photo. There is a little stringy bit of material near it which makes it look a bit different, but it's just as I was expecting from pictures that I've seen before.

That's a nice photo.
It's been a while since I found an egg other than popping back to the huge fallen branch at Rossie Priory. I got another couple from there at the weekend - there will be plenty more, but just requires the patience to go through thousands of twigs!

I've continued to occasionally hunt through oak twigs for PH eggs with mixed success. I collected some largish windfall branches today from a field where I'd seen hairstreaks, and spent an hour this evening going through them. It looked like it would be a blank but I found 2 in succession just as I was about finished looking at maybe 300 leaf buds. They are not as white as they were in August/September - distinctly off-white now and a bit harder to spot. I have found a total of 23 now, one of which was last year's that had never hatched (grey with algae and on last year's buds), and one had been predated, with a hole in it and empty.
