Jim, your rounds are going to take you ages this morning! I hope you have a large note book with you!!
I was feeling a bit left our from all of this action, with me being away at the weekend and stuck in the office during the week. However, last night I was delighted to see 15 Painted Ladies on my Buddleia when I arrived home, even though there were very threatening skies. I tried to take some pictures, but it was just too dark to get anything sharp. At least I have experienced a bit of this mass migration, I thought to myself.
This morning, when I went out with the dog there were masses of Painted Ladies on the Buddleias again. Along my walk there were a few Small Tortoiseshells, a couple of Large Whites, six Small Whites and probably 10 to 15 Painted Ladies on hedges, cars and the track.
Back at the house and with the dog fed, I had time to try to count the butterflies. A very conservative estimate of 140 Painted Ladies on my side of the Buddleia, three more Small Tortoiseshells, looking a little intimidated, two Large Whites and a Red Admiral landed on the house and then plucked up courage to feed on the Buddleia. Then three Green-veined Whites arrived together, as if they had heard there was a party. Eventually, I dragged myself away, but later as I left the house to go to work, I saw a beautiful fresh Peacock there, too. If that is what it was like at 8am, I would love to see it at 10 or 11.
Meanwhile I received an e-mail from Abbie who said that there is a stream of Painted Ladies going along a track, past her house heading inland.
What an amazing event we are witnessing.
