It is amazing how many Painted Ladies there are around Jim. That is a good early Ringlet, too.

I was out and about around East Lothian today. Despite the strong south westerly wind and not much sunshine this afternoon I still saw 21 Speckled Woods, 12 Painted Ladies, 8 Green-veined Whites, 7 Red Admirals, 6 Small Whites, 1 Common Blue and my first Meadow Brown near Gullane.

I received an e-mail today from Abbie who had seen 10 male Common Blue near Tranent and 10 Painted Ladies at Longniddry. Also some Small Whites, Red Admiral, Peacock, Small Copper and Small Heath.

I would love to know where the Painted Ladies set off from. Most of those I saw today were along the coast and it was interesting to see how well they managed to fly in the strong wind.

I had a good transect today. Initially all I seemed to see what Speckled Woods, but once I was into the meadow I found that many of the Painted Ladies were still there. 18 today, compared to 35 last week, but still an amazing number. I ended up with 9 Speckled Woods, 10 Green-veined Whites (the numbers are quickly declining, but will soon pick up again), 2 Red Admirals, 2 faded Peacocks (but one was stuck in a cobweb), a Large White, a Small Copper and an Orange Tip.

The Countryside Ranger at Levenhall recorded 8 Ringlets on his transect.

Abbie Marland reported Painted Ladies everywhere she looked and believes they are still coming in from the sea. She also saw 19 Common Blues near Tranent, 5 Small Whites and a Large White.

This evening while I was walking my dog near Gifford a Painted Lady landed on the track in front of us.

]My first Small Skipper of the year today in Luffness Quarry and my first Ringlet in Aberlady Bay. Otherwise very quiet, just 1 Painted Lady in the bay.

At Levenhall Links had 5 Painted Ladies at the east end by the old Scottish Power vehicle entrance. No Skippers there yet though.

I have received some good records from Abbie this weekend. On Saturday she reported Small Skippers, Ringlets, Common Blues, Small Heaths and a Painted Lady near Gullane. Also Ringlets and Painted Ladies at Aberlady.

Today she was at Gullane surveying plants with the volunteers and she reports a Dark Green Fritillary, Painted Ladies, Red Admirals, Small Whites, a Green-veined White and dozens of Speckled Woods! Here are some of her lovely pictures.

At last, our first East Lothian Grayling of the year. Well done to Abbie Marland for spotting it.

75 Painted Ladies, 7 Red Admirals, 3 Speckled Woods and a Small White on my round in Longniddry today.

Also 4-5 Graylings on top of the Meadowmill pyramid mid-afternoon, and at least 12 more Painted Ladies in Prestonpans and Gullane.

Amazing numbers Jim. Those are celebrity Graylings, Abbie reported fine today and so did the Countryside Ranger. He said he had met you.

I was cutting the River Tyne Path today with the volunteers between Sandys Mill and Hailes Mill. I saw 16 Speckled Woods, 13 Painted Ladies, 11 Red Admirals, 3 nice new Small Tortoiseshells, 2 Ringlets, 2 Green-veined Whites, a Large White and a very tatty Peacock.

I had a good transect today with plenty of butterflies around. 21 Ringlets, 12 Speckled Woods, 9 Red Admirals, 4 Painted Ladies, 4 Green-veined Whites, 2 Meadow Browns and single Small Tortoiseshell, Large White and Small White. There were also 24 Chimney Sweeper moths and 9 Silver Ys.
Best of all a Clouded Yellow flew across the meadow in front of me and then over the river and off.
It is interesting that the number of Painted Ladies has been dropping since they arrived three weeks ago.

However, Abbie reported an estimated 100 of them close to North Berwick yesterday and today a further 35 or 40 at Longniddry today, some of them egg-laying. She also saw 15 Ringlets, 7 Common Blues, 2 Large Whites, a Small Heath, a Small Tortoiseshell and a Red Admiral.
Abbie's pictures below.
