East Lothian Sightings June 2019

Postby NickMorgan » Thu 06 Jun 2019 21:35

After a meeting at Meadowmill this morning with no natural light I decided to take a quick walk on the pyramid. There was a lot of cloud cover, but patches of blue sky so it may have been sunny earlier in the day. As I walked onto the pyramid I disturbed a Red Admiral and then a Painted Lady, so it looks as though yesterday's migration has reached East Lothian. A little later as I was leaving I saw a Common Blue.
Abbie sent me an e-mail to say that she had seen five or six Red Admirals in the car park at Tesco in Haddington and later, at her house, six Small Whites and a Speckled Wood.
I also saw a couple of Green-veined Whites in Gifford when I arrived home this evening.

Yes - plenty of migrant species seen along the East Lothian coast in the sunny spells today. I had 7 Red Admirals and a Painted Lady (plus 2 Peacocks) in Longniddry this morning - and then another 3 Red Admirals and another Painted Lady in Prestonpans early afternoon.
Alan Brown (in whose garden I saw the Longniddry Painted Lady) had a Clouded Yellow at Aberlady Bay this morning.

I was pleased to read about the Red Admirals and Painted Ladies, but the Clouded Yellow is very exciting.

There have been all sorts of reports of Painted Ladies arriving in East Lothian in force today.
Abbie reported more than twenty on her visits around Longniddry and Aberlady. I just had to post this lovely picture she sent me.

I had an interesting transect on Monday. Very few butterflies to begin with, which surprised me a bit. However, by the time I arrived in Clerkington numbers really picked up, with 34 Painted Ladies enjoying the Dames Violets after their long flight. Also 35 Green-veined Whites, 13 Red Admirals, 6 Orange Tips, 5 Speckled Woods, 2 Small Whites and 2 Peacocks.

When I arrived back in the office I had an e-mail from Abbie who had seen 35 Painted Ladies, 5 Small Coppers and 2 Small Whites in the Garleton Hills, and 2 more Painted Ladies in Haddington, 10 Common Blues, a Peacock, a Small Copper and 2 Green-veined Whites near Tranent.

I hate to think how the butterflies are getting on this evening in this heavy rain.

Still lots of Painted Ladies around - had a total of at least 23 in East Lothian yesterday (17th). Saw 19 in Longniddry plus 6 Red Admirals - 8 and 2 of these respectively were on the excellent herbaceous flowerbed on the west side of Dean Road - plus another 3 in North Berwick. Finally had both a PL and a RA zip through our garden in Gullane later on in the afternoon.

Just had my first Ringlet of the year during a short walk near to Gullane that also featured 7 Painted Ladies, a Small Heath and 2 Small Coppers.

This morning's postal round in Longniddry sunshine was completely dominated by Painted Ladies - I counted at least 56 in just over 3 hours. The only other butterflies I saw were 7 Red Admirals, a Speckled Wood and a fly-by white.
