That is a lovely Begbie Speckled Wood, George. I haven't managed to see a Speckled Wood yet this year!
I will e-mail you a contact at Newhailes. They don't have a ranger based there any longer.

Tried for Green Hairstreak at East Lammermuir Deans today but only glimpsed two or three unconfirmed fly bys in the bright light and hill breeze.
Amazing how they can disappear ! More time and a shorter route might have helped.
Half a dozen Small Coppers the best of the usual current common species , including a trio dog fighting.

Managed to do my transect today at lunch time, but didn't quite beat the lunchtime cloud. The first six sections were sunny and there were plenty of Orange Tips and Green-veined Whites flying around. I even saw my first Speckled Woods of the year, a couple of Peacocks and a Small Tortoiseshell.
For the last two sections I had to look out for butterflies that were hiding amongst the vegetation.

In the mean time Abbie reported Wall Browns and Small Coppers near Gullane yesterday and today she saw a Green Hairstreak in Saltoun Wood.
