East Lothian Sightings , April 2019

Postby georgehogg » Sat 06 Apr 2019 15:28

1 Peacock at Grants Braes Haddington yesterday morning and 1 in Saltoun Big Wood in the afternoon.
Also 1 in glen just downstream of Thurston Mains on 2nd April.
Sure I have had one or two other fly by Peacocks this month but can't recall where.
Generally gone a bit quiet though .

Lots of butterlfies seen today - but they were all Peacocks! Had 10+ in Longniddry this morning during my postal round - and then another 5 in Prestonpans in the early afternoon.

Yes, it seems to be mostly Peacocks at the moment and the odd Comma. Those early Orange Tips are probably wondering why they bothered!
Oh to be back in the warmth of February!

A wee bit more variation today! 12 Peacocks and 2 Small Tortoiseshells in Longniddry this morning - and then 5 more Peacocks and a Small White (my first of 2019) in Port Seton early afternoon.
Bit disappointed not to get an Orange-tip on my cycle home to Gullane from Prestonpans...

I will need to double check these records, as they were sent to my work, but Andy Burns was over from Fife today walking in East Lothian. He reported a lot of Peacocks and an Orange Tip, plus a couple of fly-by whites.
Meanwhile Abbie saw two Speckled Woods and an Orange Tip near Aberlady and Peacocks and Commas near her house.
All I managed was one Peacock near Gifford.
I am waiting for confirmation of an exciting sighting from George Hogg, too!! :)

Nice one George. That is the first one I have heard of in East Lothian this year.

Five Peacocks in an hour or two along Macmerry railway walk this afternoon.
Hopefully they are now egg laying .
It will interesting to see how well Peacocks do as Summer/Autumn roll on.
It's all very promising so far .

Along the R Esk walkway by Inveresk this afternoon were :

11 Orange Tips (all males)
7 Peacocks
4 Speckled Woods
2 Commas

(and a Tree Bumblebee)

Not bad for April.
