13 degrees and sunny today, so I took a walk up the River Tyne at lunchtime. I was lucky enough to see a Peacock just outside Haddington
When I returned to the office there was an e-mail from Abbie saying that she had seen a Peacock in her garden. I will try and add Abbie's picture below

From Iain Cowe on facebook…………… You wont believe this!! I know I can hardly believe it, however...Speckled Wood x2 on Prestonpans Beach today!! Many thanks to Robert Wright who is not in this group for sharing with us. The Speckled Wood don't really emerge till the end of March at the very, very earliest. It's more usually mid April. So this is off the scale and clearly sighting of the day, week, month, year. :o

That is quite something. I hope they are able to make it through the inevitable cold weather before the real spring arrives!

I saw a Comma yesterday, but I haven't heard of any Red Admirals having been seen in East Lothian this year. I suppose that I can't complain about only having five species recorded so far this year, though!

Had my first butterfly of 2019 - a Peacock - in Cotlands Park, Longniddry on 15th February.

On Sunday 17th I had a fly-by Small Tortoiseshell close to Drem Ride (S of Gullane) and a few hundred yards W a mystery species that wouldn't settle and disappeared before I got any further than noticing it was large and a faded orangey-brown colour...

On the 26th, in the unseasonably-warm sunshine, I had another Peacock in Longniddry - plus what I was sure was, but equally couldn't believe could be, a Painted Lady fly past me in Orchard Court. Looked at Twitter later, only to see a photo of a Painted Lady, taken by Malcolm Quirie in East Lothian the same day. They really are out there in February - and could also explain my mystery sighting from the 17th!

Malcolm subsequently posted photos of Peacock, Small Tort, Red Admiral and Comma all taken at West Barns on the 27th
