Borders Sightings - August 2018

Visit to St Abbs today. Not ideal conditions with a strong breeze but still a number of butterflies about especially in sheltered flower laden spots down by the loch. Pleasantly surprised to see Wall's everywhere, a wee explosion of activity with I reckon about 40 + on the stretch through the farm yard and up the road and along the edge of the loch. A number of whites about still but not in same numbers as last month (visits 18th and 31st July) when there must have been several hundred of all varieties. Small coppers were still around in good numbers (though many very ragged) at least 30+ compared to 100 + last month. Circa 12 graylings last month but none today. Meadow browns were in good numbers previously but today only 1 ragged individual. 6 small tortoiseshells previously but none today. 1 peacock (again compared to circa 6 previously) and 1 comma today. Several day flying moths (silver Y?) and 1 mystery moth (?) which was a dark, deep blue colour, no photos as I blundered into it and never managed to catch up. NB For those interested St Abbs is a great spot to watch kestrels hunting. Good views on all of my visits.
