Borders sightings

Postby Matthew » Sat 23 Jun 2018 17:39

Not much news of the Borders this year. Where are the usual Burnmouth posse?

Nice walk around St Abb's Head today. Warm but breezy. Lots of Wall and Common Blue, a handful of Northern Brown Argus and a single Speckled Wood.

St Abbs Head is where I was headed today but managed to miss the early bus Matthew. The Burnmouth Butterflies have been doing rather well this year. Northern Brown Argus and Common Blue at the moment with Large Skipper at higher densities than the past few years, Speckled Wood, Wall, Small Heath (occasional) Small Copper, I haven't been down for a few days but I can imagine Meadow Brown and Ringlet have just started to get going. Small Blue still to turn up on the Burnmouth braes overlooking the harbour, though elsewhere they have been going at it great guns since early May and still holding strong. Grayling cannot be far away now and that will complete the 2018 set.

At Catcairn Bushes this afternoon :

10+ Small Blue
2 Common Blue
1 Grayling (1st of year for me)
12 Small Heath
Numerous Meadow Browns and a few Ringlets along the coastal path.

Then at Partanhall, along the access road above the houses :

Easily 20+ Northern Brown Argus
1 Large Skipper
1 Grayling
3 Speckled Wood
2 Common Blue

Checked on the Large Skippers at Dunglass .
Still there but only saw a couple ,maybe due to habitat filling out.
Sadly didn't find any on the East Lothian side of bridge,
