My first Painted Lady of 2018 this morning - on the pavement in Wemysss Road, Longniddry. 2 fly-by whites were the only other butterflies seen in Longniddry and Prestonpans in over 6 hours of walking...

Good one Jim. I have been told that a Painted Lady was seen near Musselburgh earlier in the year, but I haven't had this confirmed. Hopefully this will be the start of a few migratory butterflies.

Abbie reported some Common Blues at Meadowmill on Thursday. Not a lot else flying just now. Orange Tips still being the most common butterfly on my transect, with a few other whites. I saw a couple of Speckled Woods and a Comma yesterday.
Abbie has reported various whites, a Small Copper and a Red Admiral today.
I spent all day down near Selkirk and saw only one Orange Tip.

2nd June - Early morning down at Hedderwick around Bullet Hill among the bottles and cans I was seeing countless Small heaths. Also a painted Lady and a Wall Brown.

5th - At Saltoun Wood. A few GV Whites, OTs and two Small Coppers.

8th- At Cotty Burn - Lots and lots of OTs, several GV and Large Whites and at least 2 Small Whites. Also two Speckleds and a Red Admiral.

Yesterday at Barns Ness I saw my first Blues of the year. A female and then a male. Also 2 Small Coppers, a Wall Brown and countless Small Heaths.

I am pleased that you have seen such a variety Will.
I don't seem to have seen very much about recently, despite the great weather. Today was better, and in a short sunny spell I saw a Meadow Brown, 7 Small Whites, 2 Green-veined Whites and a very faded Small Tortoiseshell all near Gifford. I also found some Small Tortoiseshell caterpillars on a patch of nettles along with quite a few Orange Tip caterpillars on Garlic Mustard plants.

Excellent, leodiensian. That is the first East Lothian Ringlet of the year and possibly the first East of Scotland Ringlet this year.
Would you mind e-mailing me your name and a more exact location of the butterflies and I will add them to the records that I send in to Butterfly Conservation. nmorgan@eastlothian.gov.uk I am always keen to receive records of any butterflies seen in East Lothian. Thank you.

A poor day's recording while covering my transects at Levenhall Links. The weather forecast indicated that midsummer's day was to be the best day this week! The north west wind off the sea keeping things cool and breezy.
1x Green Veined White
2x Speckled Wood beside the trees to the west of the pond, on the south side of the meadow that was cut last year.
3x Ringlets at the edge of the trees in the meadow to the south west of the pond.
It can only get better.
