East Lothian sightings Sept 2017

Postby georgehogg » Fri 01 Sep 2017 14:46

Hot on the heels of a painted lady caterpillar in my Macmerry garden , a Speckled Wood visited briefly today.
Bit faded but still a first as far as I recall.
Hoping it comes back as Speckles are prone to do .

Re my garden bin caterpillar, couldn't be sure whether RA or P.Lady so asked a butterfly i.d. internet site which said Painted Lady.Have now checked my previous photos of both larva and swaying towards Red Admiral.
Kept it to pupate so should find out for sure soon enough.
Should have known anyway as we have had an almost resident RA in the garden for weeks now.

George,
I would tend to go with Red Admiral, too. Both Abbie and I have a few chrysalises this year, which look very similar.

16 Red Admirals seen on the wing in Longniddry this morning, scattered all over the village in ones and twos rather than centred on a couple of gardens now that the Buddleias are no longer in flower. Also 6 Peacocks and a few assorted whites.

There has been a bit of a surge in Painted Ladies too with 1 in Longniddry yesterday, 2 more today, plus a couple in South Crescent, Prestonpans this afternoon

Jim,
Yes, I have had reports of Painted Ladies from a few locations over the last couple of days and I saw one in Haddington.
There seem to be quite a number of Red Admirals around and plenty of Speckled Woods.

Hi Nick / Abbie , If your red admiral pupae have not hatched yet , be on standby !
Could see colour in case this morning, butterfly emerged this afternoon , went to roost in a shrub in garden.
