For 2nd time lately , had a transect rained off soon after starting.
Frustrating as Skateraw was doing well. Only a few minutes had scored 8 Meadow Brown,,,,4 Red Admiral,,,1 Peacock,,,1 Small Tortoiseshel,,,1 Green Veined White,,,1 Flyby White,,,1 Shaded Broad Bar and 1 large Yellow Underwing.
Later Gorse Bank added 2 Wall and Thorntonloch a Painted lady.
Among the power station buildings a windblown moth almost flew into me.
Lesser Swallow Prominent.

Walked along the path from Gifford to Bolton again today.

Several GV Whites.
Several Meadow Browns
3 Red Admirals
1 Comma
1 Small Skipper
1 Small Copper
1 Painted Lady

The widest variety of species I've seen along this route and pleased to see the Small Copper. Never seen one before along this way and have hardly seen any all season.

Saltoun wood this morning not ideal conditions with cool breeze and occassional sunny intervals. Only 4 GV white, 2 small skippers and a red admiral plus some flyby whites. 1st visit this year and noticed lots of "presents" lining the paths thanks to irresponsible dog owners not picking up after their pets!. Seems to be a hot spot for dog walking businesses with 3 vans full of dogs there during my visit and not a poop bag in sight!

Great transect today. I think it is the first time in six years that I have had at least one butterfly in every section. Plenty of Green-veined Whites, some Large Whites, Small Whites, Red Admirals and Peacocks. Three Speckled Woods, two Small Tortoiseshells, three Commas, two Meadow Browns and a Small Copper. I don't know where the Small Skippers disappeared to that I saw three weeks ago.

Yesterday I ventured to Saltoun Wood quite early on in the day. Not much happening. A few GV Whites and a couple of Small Skippers.

Later in the day I went to Cotty Burn. Couple of Large Whites, at least one Small White, several fly by whites and two Peacocks in between torrential showers!

Today I was at Hedderwick Plantation in the morning. Good conditions.

Several Speckled Woods that all seemed to be in pairs mating.
17 Red Admirals. Counted at least 8 in one location.
3 Small Coppers. Most I've seen in one place in two years!
3 Common Blues. Was really hoping for more given the huge numbers there were here last year.
3 Large Whites
Lots of flyby whites
8 Peacocks
Several Meadow Browns and like the Speckled Woods they seemed to be very active mating.
1 Dark Green Fritillary.

Early afternoon I was up at Danskine Loch ( I get about....)

Clouded over. :( But saw a Small Tortoiseshell, 4 Peacocks and 2 Red Admirals as well as a good few flyby whites.

Later this afternoon I was back up at Saltoun Wood where it was mostly still sunny.

6 Small Skippers
1 Male and 1 Female Common Blue
Good numbers of Meadow Browns and flyby whites (GV I think)
1 Comma
8 Peacocks
7 Red Admirals. (Is it me or has this been the year of the Red Admiral?..)

Not a bad haul and not a bad day. Nice to have some sun and not too much wind!! What a rubbish summer... :(

Best day for Vanessids so far this year in my part of East Lothian...

Had 6 Red Admirals, 6 Peacocks, 5 Small Tortoiseshells, plus my first Painted Lady in 6 weeks, on my round in Longniddry this morning. Then 4 more Red Admirals and a Peacock in Prestonpans, early afternoon.

Most of these were seen on just 4 Buddleia bushes. A number of bushes in Longniddry, that in previous years have held good numbers of butterflies in August, have been removed over the winter. Bit of a shame.

On Thursday I paid a quick visit to John Muir Park at Tyninghame. Very windy. But behind the dunes at Ravensheugh in sheltered areas I saw a few GV whites, 6 Meadow Browns, 4 Peacocks, 4 Red Admirals, 2 Common Blues and 2 Small Coppers.
