Midlothian Sightings July 2017

Headed for Toxside moss looking for small pearl bordered fritillary. No joy with that but did discover Ringlet heaven. Stopped counting at 70 or so. Only counting those by the path so given the size of the habitat there must be hundreds or even thousands there. Not unusual to see 10 at a time even though conditions not ideal with stiff breeze and only occasional bursts of sunshine. Small Heaths (4) provided some relief along with a solitary red admiral and single GV white.

Another visit to Toxside moss yesterday produced an even bigger haul of ringlets 250+ (but probably much more as only counting those near path) and amongst this veritable host actually spotted what I hoped to see….3 small pearl bordered fritillaries!
Also 1 red admiral, circa 12 small heaths and 3 flyby whites.
