George,
I think that is this year's first record of a Common Blue for East Lothian. :)

Oops! I stand corrected. I see Jim saw a Common Blue at Skateraw on 31st May.

Yesterday at Torness
Finally the Speckled Woods are busy at Skateraw ,( min, 3 ) having only provided a faded singleton earlier in the season.
Also 1 Red Admiral same area.
Checking thistles for Painted Lady cats at Thorntonloch end, found none but saw an adult ,so maybe I was too early.
Plenty OT cats but still can't find GVwhite cats ,though an adult watched me trying !
GV Whites very active with lots of fly bys.
Also some Small Tort cats but no Peacock cats yet.

At Pressmennan Wood this morning I saw large numbers of Speckled Woods throughout the wood. Beyond the dam to the east I saw a Red Admiral , a very tattered Small Copper and 4 Ringlets. First of those I've seen this year.

A bit further on though something caught my eye on the masses of buttercups. I thought it was a Small Skipper till I started taking pics and realised it looked different. Wasn't certain at the time but if I'm not mistaken it was a Large Skipper.

Later this afternoon near Bara Loch I saw another! Again I thought it was a Small Skipper at first but the pale spots on the underwing suggest otherwise.

See pics below. Are these Large Skippers? Have they been seen around here before?

Oh aye Will, that is a Large Skipper...no doubt about it :D Fantastic spot. They had to be somewhere. The best East Lothian sighting yet perhaps. Well done. No Small just yet, but they wont be to far away.

At Barns Ness this morning. Lots of Small Heath, 4 male Common Blues, 4 Ringlets and a Painted Lady along with several fly by whites.

Later I was at East Links/Hedderwick Plantation. Again lots of Small Heath, 4 male Common Blues, several Ringlets and a Painted Lady along with fly by whites. Also lots of Cinnibar Moths.

BTW co-ordinates for the Large Skipper sightings yesterday. 55°57'15.1"N 2°34'24.2"W and 55°54'26.9"N 2°42'16.6"W

Well done Will. A great spot. Those Large Skippers are slippery characters. Not appearing for two years and then they appear about 20 kilometres west of where they were last seen. Obviously been flying under the radar for the last two years.

Many of the species are slowing down in numbers at the moment, however Speckled Woods appear to be doing very well just now. Also quite a number of Ringlets being reported and I saw my first Meadow Browns on my transect today. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks we will see an explosion of summer butterflies!

Unusual find of four Orange Tip cats on one garlic Mustard plant at Torness today.
So much for them only laying one per plant.
Took one into safe keeping as they are meant to be carnivorous !
