Down at Saltoun wood this morning for more thwarted efforts at photographing dragonflies in flight. Took a stroll round to the far side of the wood from the car park, quite early (9ish) with a cool breeze so little activity just 2 painted ladies, a red admiral and a peacock. However, pleasant surprise when I retraced my steps and stumbled on a speckled wood, 1st one I have seen there.

Great to hear that Speckled Woods and Wall Browns are doing so well. I wasn't aware of Walls at Pencraig.
I saw five yesterday along the Cliff Top Trail in Dunbar. There was also a poor Speckled Wood fighting against the wind on Haddington's Court Street!
Today I was at a meeting in Stenton and I stopped at Pressmennan for a quick walk. Despite the cloud there was a Speckled Wood.
On my drive back I stopped the van at a junction between Stenton and East Linton and thought to myself that the Sycamore in a sunny spot was a perfect place for Speckled Woods, only to see three flying around it! They seem to be the most common butterfly around just now!

Down at Hedderwick Plantation this morning. 3 Speckled Woods and nothing else but it was a bit early.

Saltoun Wood after lunch and there were countless Peacocks, 10 Red Admirals, 3 Painted Ladies, 1 Large White, 10 Speckled Woods and a very worn out looking male Common Blue.

@ricowells The most Speckled Woods I've seen in one trip to Saltoun Wood. I first spotted one at the top of the wood a couple of years back. I saw a few in the spring this year but today I counted 10. I spotted most of them on the track that leads down and away to the right at the first pond from the car park but some were up the top of the wood.

Speckled Woods in Lewisvale Park, Musselburgh today.

X2 at foot of the twisting path that leads up to the cricket pitch.

X1 on the wall between the allotments and the the recently harvested field.

Tuesday I was up at Woodhall Dean in very humid conditions. Lots of Speckled Woods all over the Dean.

Yesterday it was Saltoun Wood and there were Peacocks and Painted Ladies a plenty with several Speckled Woods, 6 Red Admirals, 1 Comma, 3 Small Coppers and some whites. Probably GVs.

There were more Painted Ladies than I have ever seen in one location. The past few years they have been few and far between at Saltoun but this year they have been there in numbers this last couple of weeks. Nice to see a few Small Coppers as they have been noticeably down in numbers there this year.
