East Lothian Sightings July 2016

Postby wgell » Sun 03 Jul 2016 07:44

Yesterday I was up at Saltoun Wood in the morning. 10+ Ringlets, 2 Small Heaths, a Meadow Brown and a male Common Blue. First Ringlets, Blue and Meadow Brown I've seen this year. Not too bad considering the weather!

Also went to Brock Wood in the afternoon. 2 GV Whites and 6 Speckled Woods.

Saltoun Wood again this morning. Expected it to be pouring but it was unexpectedly sunny and warm for most of my walk.

Ringlets out in force and several Meadow Browns.

4 Small Heaths and two Dark Green Fritillaries.

An early walk at Hedderwick this morning. Countless Common Blues along the grassy bank from Belhaven bay to Hedderwick Sands on the northeast of Hedderwick Hill Plantation. Also lots of Small Heaths, Ringlets, Meadow Browns and a couple of Dark Green Fritillarys.

Later this afternoon I was at Barns Ness. Again lots and lots of Blues in the old lime quarry and around the old caravan park. Lots of Small Heaths too which were probably the most common species there. Good numbers of Ringlets and Meadow Browns, a few GV Whites and a solitary Small Copper.

Hedderwick again today. Blues, Ringlets and DG Frits along the grassy bank as yesterday but in fewer numbers. Probably due to the wind! I swear one of the DG Frits I saw was going backwards....

At the western end of the plantation I came across a lot of very fresh and active Speckled Woods. I didn't see any anywhere apart from this one area. They were pairing among the fir trees and resting on the bracken which I've noticed them do before.

Well done George!! Aye they are never easy to find. I have no idea, as yet, what the smaller Cats on the seed pods are...they are certainly not Orange-tip...as you say, just too many...I will have to get back to you on it.

At last! For the first time this month I've managed to co-ordinate myself, some sunshine and some suitable butterfly habitat!! There have been lots of occaisons when 2 of those were present, but today, finally, all three elements came together...

This afternoon Luffness Links Quarry held a DGF, 11 Small Skippers, 20+ Ringlets, 20+ Meadow Browns, 4 Small Heaths, 4 Common Blues and 3 6-spot Burnet Moths. Also had a couple of Small Skippers behind the noticeboard at Aberlady Bay timber bridge.
