A fantastic afternoon down here at Yarrowford. Awash with Northern Brown Argus and Small Heaths plus three fresh Green-veined Whites and two Small Pearl-bordered fritillaries.

Abbie and I went down to Burnmouth last Wednesday where we met Iain Cowe. It was great to meet him after all these years corresponding on the Forum!
We couldn't believe how stunted the kidney vetch was on the scree slope, but luckily there were other areas where it was doing better. We found some Small Blues and Iain found some Large Skippers for us. As we were about to leave Abbie spotted a Wall Brown, the first I have seen all year!
We also saw a very faded Red Admiral, a late Peacock, Small White, plenty of Small Heaths and some Small Coppers.

Took day off yesterday planning to head north of Oban to look for marsh fritillaries and mountain ringlets but weather looked prtty grim in the west so went on bonkers tour of sites over this side of the country.

Burnmouth/Partenhall first - a good dozen northern brown argus, common blue and small heath, about half a dozen painted ladies, three large skipper, a couple of small copper and large white and a single wall.

Then went to Wester Moss at Fallin (outwith SE Scotland area, I believe) and was led a merry chase by about 7 large heath. Also about a dozen small blue, ringlet and half a dozen meadow brown on adjacent Fallin Bing.

And finally to Easter Inch Moss which I will put on West Lothian thread...

Small Blue Matthew at Fallin Bing? The Small Blue is extremely localised in Scotland. I would be over the moon if it was true...however...I must caution you that they are likely to have been Chimney Sweeper Moths. I would naturally love to be proved wrong :D If you have any photos at all you can share...please send to me at bordersbutterflies@eastscotland-butterflies.org.uk .

Some very good records at Partanhall, Burnmouth as well. Could you confirm those Large Skipper sightings with an approx location?

Very well done with Large Heath. I have yet to see them.

Oops. Common blues. Was perhaps thinking of small blues as didn't find any at Burnmouth.

Matthew,
:D Over excited!! Thanks for clearing that up...panic over. I know just where you found those Large Skipper along the shore at Burnmouth, and on any other year you would have found some Small Blue at that spot, but they have been very quiet along there this season.

Quite a successful afternoon near Carlops today with my first Large Heaths and there in good numbers.

On Tuesday (19th) Still good numbers of Northern Brown Argus at St Abbs and plenty of Small Coppers now on the wing.
