Saw my first of this year's adult Peacocks in Longniddry today - must be a record late date! Otherwise just a few Small Torts and Large + Small Whites to keep me amused during my postal rounds. Single Speckled Wood and Meadow Brown have made it into our garden in Gullane in August.

All a far cry from a trip to Surrey last month - Box Hill was bouncing with Gatekeepers, Chalkhill Blues, Brown Argus, DGF and Silver-spotted Skippers. Brilliant stuff.

An hour's walk round Saltoun wood this lunchtime produced disappointing numbers compared to last year…most numerous were meadow browns circa 6 or so, 2 common blues 1 good condition the other the most ragged I have ever seen. A flyby white and finally a rough round the edges small skipper. A small consolation was the number of damselflies and dragonflies who posed willingly for their portraits.

Been back from a holiday to Cyprus for a few days now, hence the lack of posts.
Nothing too exciting to report here on the butterfly front. Plenty of Meadow Browns still flying at John Muir Country Park last week, with Green-veined Whites, Small Tortoiseshells, Peacock, Ringlets, Large Whites and a Small Copper. Most interesting were nine Common Blues. Four of them were very fresh-looking, so presumably a second brood?
On my dog walk in Gifford yesterday I saw seven Meadow Browns, eight Smal Tortoiseshells, a Ringlet and 22 Green-veined Whites. I am pleased to see them in reasonable numbers again. Another Peacock and a Red Admiral in my garden, too. It is frustrating to have the Buddleia bushes in full bloom, yet so few butterflies around!

My wife saw a Wall at Hailes Castle (near East Linton) around midday today.

3 Peacocks, a Red Admiral and building numbers of whites and Small Tortoiseshells in Longniddry.

I was down at the scrapes at Musselburgh today and wandered down to the sea wall for the first time in months. Whether intentionally or by neglect the area behind the seawall path has been to grow and there is a profusion of wild flowers and some grasses. I stopped counting at 100 green veined whites (dense numbers). 15 small whites and about 10 meadow browns. I walked only a short stretch of the path so there must have been many times this number in total
